A few sketches of dogs we have owned and loved through the years.
Swandance the Irishman x Tycarreg Santa Fay. 1995 – 2007
Bred by Ann Bull, Josie combined good looks with superb temperament and was to make a huge impact on this kennel. She became our first ever CC winner – Windsor 1998 (M. Blake – Blakeshay).
She had two litters, both by Declan (Penwest Pelham at
Tycarreg). The first litter included CC winner Tycarreg
Status Flo to Dovehayes owned by Lynette and Ken Knowles
and her second litter produced our first Show Champion, Sh
Ch Tycarreg Sparks Fly JW ShCM and litter sister Sh
Ch Tycarreg Sarah Fortune by Penwest owned by Penny Westaway.
Other siblings made up the team representing Tycarreg in the Pedigree
Breeders’ Stakes inaugural year, where they were the first
pointers to win a heat and the overall stakes and went on to represent
the breed in the Grand Final held at Crufts 2003. 2006 saw her daughter
Sarah Fortune achieve BIS at the SPC Ch Show and her granddaughter
Dovehayes Facsimile (Sh Ch Robippa Flashlight x
Tycarreg Status Flo) win CC and BIS at the Pointer Club Ch Show.
In the same year her grandson Sh Ch Jesterly Evening Glow
(Sh Ch Tycarreg Sparks Fly x Lynwater Rummy of Crookrise) won BIS
at the Pointer Club of Scotland.
Josie certainly made her mark. Always so full of life and vitality,
so sadly missed, never to be forgotten.
Peakdale Jackdaw x Sh Ch Bradgate Kassiopi of Penwest
A marvelous character and true gentleman of the breed, always happy and keen to please, he was to play a major part in the success of Tycarreg.
With his ever wagging tail he raised the profile of pointers around the local shows where he excelled as a showdog, notching up four Best in Show awards.
He was also involved in several ‘first-times’ for Tycarreg: attending Welsh Kennel Club Top Dog and Top Puppy and SWKA Dog of the Year in its Millennium year of inception. He was also sire of the overall winning team of the first ever pointers to win the SWKA Breeders’ Stakes; they subsequently appeared as finalists at Crufts 2003.
As a stud dog his two matings to Roses in the Snow produced, in successive generations, eleven individual CC winners including five Show Champions.
Below are some general details and highlights…
Bred by Penny Westaway (Penwest), Declan loved the show ring and had a marvelous show career, notching up many fine wins from BPIS to four BIS. His many other awards are far too numerous to mention.
Originally acquired with the intention of a union with our own Roses in the Snow (Josie) the subsequent two litters more than fulfilled our expectations. Their progeny winning CCs both for ourselves and others. These include our own Sh Ch Tycarreg Sparks Fly JW ShCM, Mr & Mrs Knowles’ Tycarreg Status Flo to Dovehayes JW, Penny Westaway’s Tycarreg Sarah Fortune by Penwest.
Other winners from these litters:
• Tycarreg Sublime Fellow – A Bull
• Tycarreg Scott Free – J & C Clements
• Tycarreg Spring Feva with Bunnahabhain – A Paton
• Tycarreg Scarlet Feather at Hampsbeck – R Swift
• Tycarreg Seren Fai
Coupled with his superb nature and natural ability was his wonderful character which has won him a special place in all our affections.
‘…quality b/w, excellent body condition, balanced head, good eye, lovely bone & feet, good topline, moved well, BOB.’ Richard Morris
‘Pointer of great balance, liked his head, excellent shoulder placement & feet. Nice ribbing, well conformed rear. Moved well with firm topline and correct tail. BNSC. Ann Arch
Penwest Pelham at Tycarreg x Roses in the Snow
We pay tribute to Evan, our much loved Sh Ch Tycarreg Sparks Fly JW ShCM, who gave us so much pleasure during his life at home and in the show ring. He leaves progeny and grand-progeny to continue the success of this kennel. Kind comments we have received about Evan:
‘He was a one in a million dog and those special moments will be with you forever’
‘He has left a legacy of lovely children and grandchildren’
‘What a fantastic ambassador for the breed and what a legacy he has left behind’
A kind and gentle dog who besides having a special place in our hearts gathered many friends and admirers worldwide. Thanks to everyone for their kind words and thoughts at such a sad time when we lost him to illness.
Evan burst onto the show scene on his very first outing at Mid Western Gundog in October 2001 where he gained Reserve Best Puppy in Show under Frank Kane.
‘…beautiful baby with superb lines and soundness, giving almost 6 months away here, but watch out for him.’
Barbara Critchley judged the breed classes at Mid Western. Here are her comments:
‘…Just 6 months, stood out for his quality, super balanced body, flowing lines, presented a very pleasing picture, grand head, neck, shoulders, superb quarters and width of second thigh, correct tail, was so full of himself on the move but did settle enough to show his effortless stride and drive which I expected to see from his conformation. Loved him and shall watch his career. RBPIS.’
He went on to win two BPIS, two RBPIS, two Junior Stakes, his Junior Warrant and a Reserve CC. Along with many BOBs and Gundog Groups, and a major milestone… Best in Show at the 2003 Irish Pointer Club Championship Show.
He achieved these wins under both breed specialists and all-round judges. Evan has sired exceptional litters including Championship Show winning progeny, some gaining Junior Warrants, Reserve CCs and CCs.
Evan won four CCs, four reserve CCs to add to his 3 Green Stars. He also gained his Show Certificate of Merit.
Known for his excellent temperament which he passed on to his offspring as well as his winning ways.
Penwest Pelham at Tycarreg x Roses in the Snow
Like her younger brother Evan, Elen was well known for her superb temperament and fundamental soundness – the ongoing mission of the Tycarreg kennel.
Sadly she is no longer with us but in her heyday she had many firsts to her credit including Crufts 2001, two BIS, two BPIS and Pro Dogs Stakes winner 2002. She was also one of the SWKA Breeders’ Stakes winning team members.
Elen gained a Reserve Green Star at the 2004 Irish Pointer Club Championship Show.
City of Birmingham Championship Show – 1st – Theobald’s Tycarreg Seren Fai, sound b/w, good head, kind expression, dark eye, good reach of neck and lay of shoulder, good shape, depth of rib & coupling, oval bone, liked her overall balance, moved very well. Judge – Mick Howes
Juennerfly Arkwright x Tycarreg Seren Fai
Charlie’s stunning good looks, with his striking black head and well developed body, coupled with his outstanding movement have together won him many admirers. As a puppy he achieved BPIB, Puppy Group 1 and Gundog Puppy/AV Gundog Puppy wins – plus 3 RBPIS. He also won BOB, many Group placings and Championship show wins.
Juennerfly Arkwright x Tycarreg Seren Fai
Blaze’s endearing character and happy outlook marked him out as a typical example of the Tycarreg kennel. He chalked up many show successes during his career: BPIB, Puppy Group 1 and Gundog Puppy/AV Gundog Puppy wins – also gaining BPDIB at Championship Show level, a BPIS and RBPIS (Open).
In his later years Blaze had a lovely life with one of our friends living locally. Sadly, Blaze passed away in February 2014.
Sh Ch Tycarreg Sparks Fly JW ShCM x Sh Ch Bonnygate Gunns ’n’ Roses
Her show successes include:
Best Puppy in Show at the Irish Pointer Club Championship Show
Gundog Group 2 at Worcester & Malvern CS 2006
BIS
RBIS
2 RBPIS
BOB and several Best Puppy in Breed plus many other 1st prizes
After her successful puppy career Saskia continued to win well at all levels, including a notable win in the PAT Dogs Stakes 2008.
She finally decided to be a mum in November 2009 and produced a beautiful litter sired by our own Kiswahili Kai at Tycarreg.
Penwest Phineas at Kiswahili JW x Wyndsmoor Gold Lace of Kiswahili
Tom came to us at six months old and began a successful show career, winning BPIB and Puppy Gundog Groups as well as Championship Show firsts. Being a lively lad, Tom prefers our local moorland to the confines of the show ring but joined his son Rhys on occasion to compete in Brace classes. Tom is a proven dog, his first litter including our own successful Rhys and his beautiful winning sister Sassy Fontaine, owned by Linda and David Skinner. His pedigree contains well established lines and his lively character and kind disposition make him a much loved asset to our small kennel.
Kiswahili Kai at Tycarreg x Juennerfly Amber Tycarreg
He has had an exceptional show career, at one stage being unbeaten in his class on his way to winning his Show Champion title in 2013.
He qualified several times for the PAT Dog Stakes, competed in Welsh Junior of the Year, Top Dog and Puppy event, qualified and competed in the Junior Warrant competition Final and many other super wins.
Rhys and his handler Matthew Oddie formed a winning partnership and many thanks are due to Matthew, and of course the judges who have thought Rhys worthy of such high honours.
Rhys won 9 CCs and 12 RCCs. He has now passed away. Our very last pointer.
